First of all, all of you looking at the GSLAQ Blog, please be patient with me (Jerrilynn) because I am just learning how to do all of this.

Our August 2011 GSLAQ Meeting on 08/04/11 was great. I did the Block of the Month - Wheel of Time. Sylvia showed two Quilts of Valor that are ready to be donated. Patricia Stoddard came to show us her Trunk Show on Ralli Quilts of Pakistan and India. Below are a few pictures of the meeting. The previous two blogs to this are pictures of the Ralli Quilts.

I got lucky and finally got some of the pictures from our April GSLAQ meeting on this blog. Please bear with me, I am in a huge learning curve and will eventually get things figured out. Thank you "Pieces of Heaven" quilters for sharing your wonderful creations with us.

Pieces of Heaven Quilt Group from Draper hosted the April GSLAQ meeting. They are a closed quilt group because they had so many members. They are very talented women who shared their quilts with us. Their quilt meeting is the same day as ours, therefore, they usually are not able to attend the GSLAQ meeting. Please enjoy the following pictures from their fantastic show.

There was a fast and easy four patch demonstration by Sylvia. See Sylvia for instructions.

“Frayed Fish” by Diane Gardner. She will be demonstrating how to do this at Quilt Days.

Diane also makes wonderful doll clothes for the American Girl Dolls.

Forty years ago Barbara Hiatt made a promise to make a wedding quilt and a baby quilt for all her nieces and nephews. This beautiful pink quilt is the last one she will make to fulfill this promise.

Barbara entertained us with the story of how a fast quilt for a teenage girl turned into a lot more than that.

Shery Walker made this “Material Girls” quilt for her friend who belongs to a group called “Material Girls”.

Gail Gillespie shared this peach Christmas beauty with us.

Cindy Braby awed us with this cute “Gingerbread Man” quilt that was a result of an exchange at Canyon Corners.

Chris Robinson shared this beautifully colorful bag that she made while recuperating from her surgery.
Types of batting were discussed and “Bamboo Batting” is the recommended one to use. It is light in weight and hypoallergenic.
Fun was had by all. Hope to see you all for our “Charity Sew In” in March.

Donna started sewing with doll clothes for her Barbie. She showed us items made by her Grandmother.

Donna’s Grandmother’s fan quilt, top made for Donna and quilted by herself, her sisters, her mother and her Grandmother.

Donna’s first quilt – made of little hexagonal pillows sewn together.

Donna started at Sandy Quilts.

Donna got her long arm in 1998. She bought her Gammill in 2000.

The next five quilts were quilted by Donna for customers.

When asked how she is inspired to quilt a certain pattern, Donna said that she puts the quilt on the couch or sits on a chair and the quilt talks to her and tells her what is needed.

This was quilted for Pat Hansen – Stars and Eagles quilted in gold thread.

This antique quilt top was bought on the internet for Donna to practice her longarm quilting skills.

This beautiful quilt was quilted with three threads.

These ferns are a Fast Fun Four Patch and were quilted using a pantograph.

This incredible Cardinal Quilt was a challenge. The challenge fabric is the narrow piping visible between the red and green border.

This very colorful quilt was a First Saturday Block of the Month using Aunt Gracie fabrics.

This quilt was from the Sandy Stitchers Dresden Plate challenge.

This quilt is called “The Temple Within”. The Salt Lake Temple is elegantly quilted in the center of this masterpiece.

Pat Hansen did these beautiful appliqued flowers and Donna quilted them.

This is the conclusion of a fantastic trunk show by Donna Sine. We appreciate so much that she took the time to share her beautiful work with us. The beautiful quilting that she does cannot be captured in pictures on a blog. The beauty of it must be seen in person.

Greater Salt Lake Area Quilters - 3 February 2011 Meeting

ANNOUNCEMENTS: National Quilt Day is March 5, 2011.
Quilt Days will be held at 90th South 13th East, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sat. 3/5/11. Bring a potluck dish to share.
Quilts for Home of the Brave – Make a 12 ½” red, white and blue quilt block and leave it at Quilts, Etc.
GSLAQ March Program will be a “Sew In” for Charity Quilts.
GSLAQ April Program will be done by the Pieces of Heaven Quilt Group. They will have a trunk show and aprons.
Utah Quilt Guild projects for 2011 presented by the North Salt Lake Area Representative Donna Sine:
We will keep the charity quilts at home this year.
*The Kaysville Group will make lap size quilts to give to chemo patients.
*The Susan G. Koman material for making charity block is $5.00/square.
*We will be making single size quilts to give to service peoples’ families.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Crystal North, President of Utah Quilt Guild visited us and explained the new organization of the Greater Salt Lake Area. It seems that there was a misunderstanding and "The Area" did not need to dissolve. It has been reorganized into Area and Chapter with two Area Representatives. Donna Sine is the North Representative and Denise Fells is the South Representative. The purpose in organizing us as a chapter was to give us more leadership and better division of label. So, the upside is that we have two representatives who can give six to seven chapters each better representation. Our two representatives go to the Utah Quilt Guild area meeting monthly and receive leadership instruction from Josephine Kessler, Vice President in charge of area representatives. Dona Sine is the North Representative. Her chapters are City Stitchers, Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter, Rose Park, Gone to Pieces, Quilters Holladay, Square Corner Quilters and Tooele. Denise Fells is the Southern Representative and her chapters are Pieces of Heaven Quilters, Sew Fine, Sandy Stitchers, Sew Foxie and the Seam Rippers. Both representative will attend the Utah Quilt Guild monthly meeting and report the Guild news to their chapters. Donna has sent an email to the northern chapters asking their presidents to complete the 2011 Chapter Carter on-line and emailing to Josephineuqg@aol.com . Sylvia would like a copy emailed to Sylvia.norris@utah.edu to put in our minutes/history of the Chapter/Area. If you would like to complete the prize money application you can get that over with at the beginning of the year or wait a few month prior to the contest for which approval. Again please send a copy of prize money application to Snorris.norris@utah.edu for our Area/Chapter records.

The other positive is that we can get prize money as a chapter of $25.00 for a quilt contest and $50.00 prize money for an Area Contest. We had changed our name to GSLAQ, Greater Salt Lake Awesome Quilters". But after finding out that we did not have to dissolve the area we returned to "Greater Salt Lake Area Quilters." The short of it is we will continue to meet as an area, this will also be our chapter meeting on the first Thursday of each month at the Salt Lake County, Northeast corner building at 2100 South and State. The meeting is held in the chamber room, N1100 and is reached by going into the east entrance of the building (backside). Parking is east of this building. The time is 06:30 - 09:00 pm.
JANUARY 2011 MEETING

Cheryl Brown from Centerville, Utah, long arm quilter and author presented a Trunk Show of her quilts published in her first book, “Fresh and Fabulous Quilts” on sale now. We thoroughly enjoyed her show. Comments were made about her youthful patterns and colors. Her style is such that each quilt has it's own, individual characteristics. Her book was on sale at the meeting and it can be found on Amazon and in the local quilt stores. She has also won a prize in a (magazine name). She found us when she was visiting Whimsy Cottage and mentioned that she wanted to know how to get into the quilting community to promote her products and she was introduced to our former president, Maria Bates.

We had a great “Show and Tell”, as always. We didn’t have a camera so we asked Cheryl to send us some pictures for our newsletter. For future meetings we will have a camera. We are also working on learning how to blog, so look for a great work in progress GSLAQ Blog.

Donna Sine, our representative, will be presenting a "Trunk Show" of her work for our February 2011 meeting. She is a long arm quilter and does fantastic quilting. Sylvia Norris will do a quick four-patch demonstration. This is a quick process of making four patches by Billie Lauder. Jerrilynn will present January and February Quilt Blocks. And as always don’t forget your show and tell. See you there.

Suggested Changes for Discussion at the Next Meeting

August we are going to have a Pot Luck Picnic and discuss any changes we would like to make to the bylaws of our chapter. Please something to share.

Proposed Changes

1 . To better reflect that we are a guild CHAPTER and not an AREA meeting, it is proposed we change our name from GSLAQ Greater Salt Lake Area Quilters to GSLAQ Great Salt Lake Awesome Quilters. Easy change so we don't have to change the website.

2. It has been suggested we disband completely. Our numbers are so low. No one wants to pay dues to join which is very limiting when it comes to finding guest speakers and fulfilling the needs of door prizes and fat quarters.

More coming I am sure.

This website was a present from Eric Lowry for his mother, Nancy Lowry, who is currently our Vice-President. She wanted a place where her family and friends could all post pics and comments on each others quilts. That was the original idea, but like always in our family we found we love to share our projects and ideas with everyone. QuiltZilla the constantly changing and growing quilters bragging site was born.

When we say this is a collaborative site we mean it. We encourage your comments on every page. We really do want to know what you think. A warm GSLAQ welcome and Thank You goes out to our favorite Crazy Quilter! Cathy Kizerian was gracious enough to accept our invitation to come and talk to us about crazy quilting. She told us about the history of crazy quilting and showed us a historical piece that she had. She also explained the design process and how to get started. she also offered kits for first timers. Then Cathy proceed to wow the audience with some of her gorgeous award-winning purses and quite possible the best african inspired piece I have ever seen! Thanks again Cathy.

The June meeting was wonderful! We had a pretty good attendance, with about 25 people there. Pictures are posted below.
